“A Standstill,” new poetry by Khatira Mahdavi

I called you

and gave you my word

that between right now and forever

there is a house of mirrors,

and then there is you.

You, a standstill—

the starting point, the finish line

and all of the in-betweens.

You called back

and whispered across the line

that from here until anywhere,

I’m your favourite ride along.
